Research

Research goals of the center include the identification and understanding of novel genes that control important biochemical pathways and developmental processes in plants, animals and microorganisms and the transfer of this basic knowledge to industrial applications.

Current Research Projects

  1. Genome Research: Functional and structural analysis of plant and microbial genomes to identify, sequence and map genes that play critical roles in controlling significant traits.
  2. Plant Biotechnology: Research projects are aimed at increasing plant tolerance to environmental stress, improving the quality and yield of cotton lint, development of insect resistance and disease resistance.
  3. Implications of the Human Genome Project: The Center sponsors workshops to inform print and electronic media science writers on the social, legal and ethical implications of the Human Genome Project.
  4. Feedlot Waste Remediation: Research projects focus on the use of bacterial strains to minimize odor and phosphate contamination of groundwater supplies.
